QLD Fishing Report

Brought to you by Compleat Angler Mackay:

Here we are, less than a month out till Christmas and the effort is underway to get the self caught seafood for the festive season. Because of the distance to catch our reef fish we need a maximum of 15kts to fish in comfort, especially the shipping channel. The inshore mackerel run has slowed up however they have been known to spawn on the bottom then return to the surface for a frenzy feed before they move south. Most of the feedback has been associated with the creeks where crabbing has improved. The trick is these days is to set your pots where you can monitor if not hide them to minimize the share farming that goes on. Landing Creek south to the Habana area including Constant Ck suits on the bigger tides. Bakers ck, the small creeks opposite McEwans, Freshwater Point and Cape Palmerston are all worth a crab at the moment. Now that the River Street boat ramp is up and going it didn’t take long for the bait to be found in the backwater also bream and jacks on the nearby rock wall. Local tournament fisherman Phil Lyons scored his PB barra out of Kinchant Dam recently, measuring 130cm with an estimated weight of 40kg WOW, and it is no secret that there is more around to be caught.

Good Luck.
