QLD Fishing Report
Brought to you by Compleat Angler Mackay:
Adding to the excitement of putting fish into the esky has been the amount of whale sightings close inshore to the mainland. The Southern Breakwater at the Harbour is one of the best vantage points as the pods head South. There has been an increase in Spanish mackerel catches to those who waited till the top of the tide and fished the start of the outgoing. Danger Reef and Roundtop Island stand out places when fished with trolled gar and wolf herring. The Eastern side of Slade Island is producing black spot tuskfish (bluies) when presented with a good quality prawn or crab fished on the bottom. For anyone fishing past the outer Islands along the Shipping Channel, trout, reddies and sweetlip still abound however watch the forecast as the westerlies have made the return journey very uncomfortable until they are past Scawfell Island when the seas have settled. The Goldsmiths Islands south along Bullion Rocks and Allonby Island is a prime mackerel haunt now, and with the size and quality of the pilchard bait there’re nothing better. Now that the flathead are spawning some good catches have been recorded along Illawong, Southern End of Blacks and Seaforth Beaches. Best method is 2in. or 2.5in. plastic grubs rigged with 1/8oz – 1/0 jig head. 3in. plastic prawn makes for a ideal backup.
