QLD Fishing Report
Brought to you by Compleat Angler Mackay:
The good news for Mackay anglers is that there is some big fish getting around, and for those who like to do a spot of whale watching, won’t have to travel far, as they have been sighted moving closer to the mainland. As for fish, a bigger than average snapper 8-9kg, has been taken from the Harbour Breakwater. I have to tell you that would be a fish of a lifetime for me and I believe fell victim to a well presented squid bait. Some good weather has allowed trips offshore where Spanish mackerel were taken from Wigton Island around the 10kg mark, which is normal size for that area, the best method, jigging big Lunker City plastic grubs up through the water column, then further out closer to Parker reef, bigger fish were recorded one of which went to Mackay Gamefishing Club member Todd Atfield, a very pleasing 24.5 kilo taken on 6 kilo line. The smaller mackerel species are showing up closer inshore near Keswick Island and the nearby shoals. Have plenty of 20–30gm Live Bait lures or pilchard bait rigged on 5/0 gang hooks.
The dirty water has taken longer than expected to clear in the creeks and waterways which has improved the crabbing, as this clears whiting, salmon, flathead will be back on the menu. Lastly, I have just returned from the Australian Tackle Show and can I suggest, get into your local specialist tackle store for a chat, you’ll be excited with the new product and innovations that is coming our way. Good Luck!
