QLD Fishing Report

Brought to you by Compleat Angler Mackay:

The first coral reef-fin closure for 2016 has come and gone with little impact and the second is at the end of this month, also barra closure in place till midday 1st Feb. 2017 so no more needs to be said about that. The first thing to note is the size and quality of whiting in the Pioneer river. While a night fish on the incoming tide has been the most productive, tides this week has it outgoing at night, so the sand gutters between Forgan-Smith Bridge and Cullen Island opposite Canelands Shopping Centre has been the most rewarding. Yabby bait preferred over prawn and squid strips. Popper and stick bait lures in dark colours at night while clear with tiger stripes, resembling a small prawn get the job done during the day. Further up the river near Fursden Creek salmon are in small numbers. Strip gar and ribbonfish for the bait fanatics, while 3.5’’ Bammer reflextion and Yakamito Vibes for the lure tossers. School and spotty mackerel continue to feed on the bait inshore and offshore. Pilchard bait fished on the bottom and top of the tide around the rock reefs off Eimeo, Shoal point, Victor Island and Taffy Island should get you a feed. Kinchant, Teemburra and Peter Faust dam have been fishing hard lately, a couple of theories are water temp. still cool and westerlies at night won’t help. Our first summer storm will turn that around.

Good Luck.
